Rick is an Orange County native-turned Midwesterner. Though he wasn't born here, Rick is no stranger to the Windy City. Even as a little boy growing up in suburban Plainfield, Rick dreamed of being on the radio in Chicago. However, the telemarketing industry lured him in to the point where for six months, he attempted to sell insurance over the phone. After realizing that interrupting families having dinner to sell insurance wasn’t a lucrative line of work, Rick packed up his things and realized his love for radio, stopping in cities such as Peoria, Rockford, and Milwaukee.
During the summer of 2007, Rick married his high school sweetheart, Sarah. On the advice of everyone around him, Rick avoided drinking the water while honeymooning in Mexico. However, Rick failed to heed one important fact - wearing your wedding ring in the ocean isn't a great idea. While boogie boarding, his ring slipped off and went out to see. It was no where to be found.
Naturally, Rick LOVES music and discovering unheard of artists. Some of his favorites include FRESH artists like Lifehouse, Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, & Mat Kearney to groups like Relient K, Johnny Cash, Sanctus Real, Brandon Heath, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts.
Today, Rick and his wife Sarah reside in Chicago. They’re philanthropists at heart, taking an interest in heart research, seeing the improvement of our nation's medical system, and global issues such as disaster relief, AIDS, and hunger. Chances are you'll find the two of them together sipping a latte at an eclectic coffeehouse or trying tasty suds at local pub. This summer, they're most looking forward to further exploring the city and riding their bikes along the lakefront bike path in Chicago.
Nick Jonas and the Administration will rock your television tonight when they play the Grammy Nominations Concert Live special, but come January they're taking their act on the road. The band, which is Nick's side project without his superstar brothers, will kick off their tour in his hometown of Dallas on January 2.
I get high anxiety whenever Sarah and I go to the major discount store or the local grocery store near our home -- and usually this anxiety turns into a battle between Sarah and me.
You see, these are two of Sarah's favorite places to be. I firmly believe that one day, The Smoking Gun, will unleash a document that proves that these retailers filter oxygen in their stores in a way either ticks me off or makes Sarah want to continue shopping. That's the only explanation that I have for it.
You see, I behave just fine at other retailers -- with with these stores, I can't get out fast enough! Screaming kids, broken shopping carts, and aisles full of disgarded merchandise plagues me.
One can only imagine what sort of crank I'll turn out to be once I hit retirement.
That's why Cyber Monday was created with me in mind -- no crowds, lines, and best of all, no sticky shopping carts. All you need is the Internet, a credit card, and cash to spend.
Tip #101 -- BradsDeals.com
Save big on New Balance Shoes, North Face Jackets, HDTV's, Notebooks, Vera Bradley bags, and more. This is a great place to start your Black Friday shopping
Tip #201 -- Coupon and Promo Codes Most online retails provide you with the opportunity to enter a promotional code or coupon code before submitting the online order. These sites search forums, newsletters, blogs, and newspapers for these coupons and present them in an easy-to-search format.
Tip #301 -- Twitter!
Just about all of the major retailers are on Twitter. Before you buy, visit the Twitter page for the retailer that you're looking to buy from. There, you may stumble upon extra sales, incentives, and coupons.
Tip #401 -- Sales Tax
If you live in Cook County, buying online to save yourself from massive city 10% sales tax is an incentive enough to do so! Not all, but a lot of online retails don't charge sales tax. Before you purchase from a retailer, take an extra minute or two and search to see if you can buy the same item from another retailer, tax free.
Tip #501 -- Comparison Shop
Make sure you are getting the best bargain by visiting multi-merchant price comparison sites like Shop.com, PriceGrabber.com, and BizRate.com.

Jon and Kate -- Minus $$$$$
10/5/09
Classy Jon -- Classy ...
The self-described "Queen of All Media," PerezHilton.com is reporting that "Jon and Kate Plus 8" 'star' Jon Gosselin stole thousands of dollars from the families checking account over the weekend. Ok-- technically he didn't steal the money, as his name is on the bank account. I guess you could say he misappropriated the funds?
On Saturday, Kate discovered a meager $1,000 remaining in her bank account. Now, a lawyer for Kate is threatening to take legal action and is demanding Jon that Jon return the money ASAP!
I don't know if it was already on the docket, but Kate is scheduled to speak on NBC's "Today" a little later this morning. Coincidence? Maybe ...
Don't you hate it when you're the last to know? Dunkin' Donuts is handing out free medium cups of coffee today at each of their 500 Chicago area stores.
If only the guy at my Dunkin' told me about it before I paid for mine. :-)
Free lunches on the rise
I once attended an elementary school where school lunches were only served to students who's parents could not afford to send them to school with a lunch.
I recall, along with some of my peers, being jealous of the special hot meals that these kids got to enjoy each school day. Naturally, I had no idea why the kids were being served a hot lunch -- all I knew was that they were getting tater tots and I was stuck with another tuna sandwich.
Sadly, the Tribune revealed another sign of this bum economy -- roughly 8 out of 10 Chicago students are qualified for a free or discounted school lunch this year.
All across Chicagoland, schools are passing out more free lunches than ever! My alma mater, Plainfield Community School District 202's free/discounted program has jumped 7.3%. Frankfort's Summit Hill School District's program has skyrocketed by 32% from Fall 2008 to Spring 2009.
If you are someone you know may benefit from a free or discounted school lunch program, encourage the parent to make a phone call. State law requres that all public schools offer a free meal to eligible students even if the schools do not participate in the federal lunch program. Students who receive free meals also receive waivers for other school fees -- from textbooks to lab and school fees.
To qualify for a free lunch, families must meet federal income guidelines:
Family of Four
Free Lunch: $28,665
Reduced Price Lunch: $40,793
Without a doubt, FRESH 105.9 artist Taylor Swift has a pretty good sense of humor. Last weekend, Taylor Swift pulled a fast one over tour mate Keith Urban.
When Keith started playing his song, "Kiss a Girl," Taylor and her band rushed the stage in full Kiss makeup and garb. Backup dancers even hit the stage wearing Hershey Kisses costumes. It was a riot.
Barbara Brotman, writer for the Chicago Tribune's Play section, had a great piece in yesterday's paper about hiking through local Cook County forests.
Sarah and I have long talked about going hiking with our dog Coconut. So far, it has just been talk, as we've never actually followed through. All of that may change, now that I've discovered Palos.
Palos, roughly 16,000 acres of woods, ravines, lakes, ponds, wetlands, and prairies, is located just minutes from downtown. Discover it like I did by checking out Brotman's article, located here.

Kings of Leon Up for a VMA ... but will they win?
8/14/09
Congratulations to FRESH 105.9 artists "Kings of Leon," for scoring a nomination in MTV' Video Music Awards' Best Rock Video Category. However, they're up to some pretty stiff competition.
Bassist Jared Followill tells MTV.com, quote, "Coldplay? Green Day? So basically what you're telling us is that we'll come in last place. I swear to God, I think we might come in last place, or maybe second to last." Regardless of the results, Followill feels the band have already won by just getting recognition for one of their clips. "We're always so self-conscious about our videos. They're the hardest thing in the world to make, especially nowadays. They've been around forever, and everything's been done. So it's really, really hard to keep your videos cool. We feel like every video we've ever done is really stupid. So the fact that we're up for an award for a video is kind Of cool," said Followill. Will Kings Of Leon pull the upset?
So was it Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana pole dancing on Monday Night's "Teen Choice Awards." Either way, it's uber-creepy!
Miley, wearing a tank top, boots and short shorts, performed her new single "Party in the U.S.A." while dancing on what resembled a stripper pole. Today, everyone is questioning whether the performance was suitable for a 16-year-old, and a debate over the suggestive choreography has developed over the Internet.
Keep in mind, Miley's fame can largely be contributed to her role on The Disney Channel's series, "Hannah Montana." The network says, quote, "Disney Channel won't be commenting on that performance, although parents can rest assured that all content presented on the Disney Channel is age-appropriate for our audience - kids six to 14 - and consistent with what our brand values are."
I think what made the whole performance all the more disgusting was that her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, sat in the crowd and smiled as he watched on. This family sure knows how to raise eyebrows, especially after Billy Ray and Miley's infamous Vanity Fair photoshoot.
The Tribune's "Live" section devoted an entire page to the controversy. Grab the print edition or head over here for more details.
Never a good idea to pose nude
While sipping on coffee, a headline in this morning's Trib caught my attention: "Woman Sues over nude photos online." Apparently, a Chicago woman discovered that without permission, an ex-high school boyfriend posted nude photos of her online.
Miles Marsh, the ex-boyfriend, seems like quite the instigator. Actually, sleazebag is probably more appropriate for this guy. Supposedly, he posted the photos online in an effort to encourage other men to post nude photos of their ex-boyfriends. For more on the story, click here. Just remember, don't let this happen to you! Avoid taking picture sin the buff. Nothing good is ever going to come out of it.
Just as Kim Kardashian, Vanessa Hudgens, and the latest 'victium,' Ashley Greene.
Kourtney Kardashian is with child!
E! News reports that Kourtney, the star of the upcoming E! reality series "Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami" is pregnant with her first child. Kourtney is keeping mum on the identity of her baby's father and how far along she is in her pregnancy. When pressed for answers, the 30-year-old told E!, quote, "You're going to have to see on the show." Kourtney's reality series with younger sister Khloe debuts this Sunday on E! Kourtney and Khloe also appear with sister Kim Kardashian and their other siblings in the E! series "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." The show wrapped its third season in May.
UPDATE: On NBC's Today Show, Kourtney revealed it was none other than ex-fiance — and frequent “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” visitor — Scott Disick. Click here for more.
Regardless of whether the child is a male or female, something tells me that it's first name is going to begin with the letter "K."
Back to school ... prove to dad that I'm not a fool

One of Sarah's cousins is going to be starting kindergarten in a couple of days, and boy is she excited!
Starting kindergarten can be both an exciting and anxious time for a child. Early childhood education expert Dr. Mary Zurn says parents can make this a smooth transition by having consistent nighttime and morning routines established. Zurn is the vice president of early childhood education for Primrose Schools, which operates more than 200 preschools in 16 states.
She suggests parents begin following a consistent routine a couple weeks before school starts so every family member knows what needs to get done before heading out the door. Before the first day of school, Zurn also encourages parents to arrange a visit with their kindergartner to the school and the child's classroom.
For tips and more inforamtion, visit http://www.drzandme.com/. Her website features tips, suggestions, and a list of books to read with your child about starting kindergarten.
Mediterranean Diet Has Many Benefits
A healthy diet and exercise routine are not just good for your heart. A new study shows they may also lower your risk of a debilitating brain disease. A Columbia University study shows people who are physically active and follow the Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables and fish, lowered their risk of Alzheimer's Disease.
Cleveland Clinic geriatric expert Doctor Ronan Factora says the results show exercise, and the diet, has many benefits. The study involved more than 18-hundred elderly people, who had their diet and physical activity assessed. Researchers followed them on an average of five-and-a-half years and found exercise alone lowered the risk of Alzheimer's by at least 30-percent. Combining exercise with a Mediterranean Diet, and sticking to doing both, reduced the risk up to 44-percent. Complete findings of the study are in the "Journal of American Medical Association."
What makes your dog happy?
Sixty-two-percent of dog owners taking part in an ALPO dog food survey say their arrival home is the happiest time for their four-legged friend. Being outside is another favorite dog activity, with 52-percent noting their pooch is pleased to go for runs or walks. Treats are good, too. Nearly 50-percent believe their dog is happiest when they get a biscuit, and 30-percent say chewing on a bone thrills Fido. Dogs also enjoy their downtime. Just over 30-percent say their pup is very happy to take naps on the couch.
Pictured to the right is my dog, Coconut. She's quite easy to please, actually. Lately, she's been into playing hide-and-go-seek with me. To learn how to play hide-and-seek with your dog, check out this link. Now, if only I could teach her to go and hide. Any suggestions on that? Feel free to comment below. ;)
Something tells me that we're going to be talking about the death of Michael Jackson for years to come! The probe into the death of Michael Jackson continued on Tuesday as federal agents raided a Las Vegas pharmacy. The DEA says the raid was conducted at Applied Pharmacy Services but a spokesman declined to comment whether the effort was related to Jackson's personal doctor, Conrad Murray.
The doctor's home and medical offices in Las Vegas and Houston were searched last month. Earlier media reports quoted law enforcement sources as saying the agents were looking for computer hard drives and documents related to prescriptions written by Dr. Conrad Murray for Jackson or the singer's aliases. The pharmacy was also reportedly scoured for shipping information. On Monday, the Los Angeles County Coroner's office announced the autopsy report on the King of Pop had been completed but wouldn't be released while the investigation into the entertainer's death continued.
Paula's definitely gone, but at least we'll still have Simon! According to "The Hollywood Reporter," Simon Cowell is finalizing a three-year deal to remain a judge on the show. Robert Sillerman, the CEO and chairman of 19 Entertainment's parent company CKX, says Fox has, quote, "asked us to pre-approve him not only for 'American Idol' '09, which has begun taping, but they also asked us for approval for '10 and '11."
Sillerman declined to discuss details, but the deal would reportedly pay Cowell 45-million-dollars. He is making 36-million-dollars under his current contract. This past spring, Cowell hinted that he may leave the show once his contract expired, but began negotiating a new deal with Fox at the start of summer.
Who on earth could walk away from that gig, which pays over $35 million?!? Not even Simon, it seems!
Kelly Clarkson is gracing the cover of September's "Self" magazine, and causing quite a stir in the process. The magazine features a slimmed-down photo of the pop singer, and "Self's" editor-in-chief, Lucy Danziger, is defending Clarkson's digitally-enhanced figure. In a posting on Self.com Daniziger explains, quote, "Yes. Of course we do retouching. Did we alter her appearance? Only to make her look her personal best." She adds, quote, "I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand." Despite Danziger's explanation, several readers are still unhappy with "Self's" portrayal of Clarkson. One reader asks on jezebel.com, quote, "Why even bother asking Kelly Clarkson to pose in your magazine if you don't think her body fit into your idea of what was best?"While Kelly Clarkson's shape has been the topic of plenty of gossip, the pop starlet says she's comfortable with the way she looks. Clarkson tells "Self" magazine, quote, "I'm never trying to lose weight - or gain it. I'm just being." "Self" magazine's September issue hits newsstands on August 25th.
Paula Abdul, consider yourself warned! I've got you figured out!
The people managing Paula Abdul's career are winning big this week! In fact, I'd love hire
them for my career. She quit her job with American Idol on Friday, which was all over news headlines. Just yesterday, the President of the ABC television network was quoted as saying that he would love to have Paula on his network's popular show, Dancing with the Stars. Again, Paula's name was all over news headlines.
Today, Paula's PR people strike again! She's going to be on Letterman tonight (CBS-2, 10:35P CT). Maybe we'll learn more about what her post Idol plans entail.
One thing's for sure ... you couldn't pay for all of this publicity!
Although we've yet to receive an official word as to what caused the death of Michael Jackson, we do know a bit more about that proposed movie about Jackson.
On Monday, a court in LA approved a 60-million-dollar agreement that allows Columbia Pictures to make a movie from rehearsal video taken as Jackson prepared for concerts in London. The judge also okayed the release of Michael's autobiography as well.
Last night, FOX aired clips from Sunday night's TEEN CHOICE AWARDS. Without a doubt, the biggest winners of the night were those behind the movie Twilight, picking up over 11 awards.
Britney Spears sure hasn't lost her following, as she was appointed the award as "Ultimate Choice" among teens, which recognizes her body of work as a recording artist.Other big winners included FRESH artist Miley Cyrus, Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West, The Jonas Brothers, and Sean Kingston.
Set your DVR for Green Day's apperance on Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC-5, 12:35AM).
Chicago's Very Own Elvis!
8/18/09 -- 11:14AM
Although the king himself, Elvis Presley has come and gone, his legacy continues. All this week, Memphis TN is celebrating Elvis Week, featuring Elvis impersonators, Elvis displays at the Graceland Plaza, Elvis Week artist contests, and even Elvis Bingo at the Heartbreak Hotel. Back home in Chicago, disgraced Ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich, twice elected by the people, I must point out, celebrated his Elvis love in his own special way. In the following video, Blago jumped on stage, took over the mic, and began to sing "Treat me Nice." At one point, he unbuttoned his shirt and flipped up his collar. Patty B. would be so proud! You do have to admit, however, that he does fit the part! Click here and check out a side-by-side shot of Elvis and Rod, courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times. Poor Elvis.
Count yourself lucky if you have not been affected by all of the changes in the banking industry. It has gotten so bad that congress had to pass a consumer-protection law that goes into play February 2010. Some however, believe the credit card companies are trying to 'sock it to us' now, while they still can.If you carry credit card debit or have a credit card in your wallet right now, you should really check out this article in today's issue of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Big fan of Jewel? Check her out on The Bonnie Hunt Show (2PM CT, NBC-5 Chicago) and also on Jimmy Kimmel Live (12AM CT , ABC-7 Chicago).
A little later today, you can can check out the All-American Rejects on Ellen (3p CT, NBC-5 Chicago) and Fall Out Boy on Jimmy Fallon (11:35PM CT, NBC-5 Chicago).
So, what's Paula Abdul to do, now that she's unemployed? The president of ABC Entertainment, Stephen McPherson, says he's ready to roll out the welcome mat to her. During the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday in Pasadena, California, McPherson was asked what he thought about Abdul joining ABC's "Dancing With The Stars." He responded, saying, quote, "Absolutely, I would love that." McPherson has already talked to Abdul once since she revealed that she was leaving her post at "Idol" and said she sounded "good." He says there are still no formal plans involving Abdul for "Dancing With The Stars," but that, quote, "all possibilities are open."According to UsMagazine.com, McPherson raved about Abdul and how she would fit in at "DWTS," saying, quote, "I think she's a huge talent. I think there's a lot made of her in terms of who she is. There's a sensitivity and an emotion to her that balances out 'Idol' and we'd love to have a piece of that."
Need a little help with your resume, coverletter, or job hunting skills? Through the rest of the month, the Brighton Park Library will be holding sessions to help you land that new gig! Call 312/747-0666 to schedule an appointment.

Early Wakeup Call!
Starting Monday (8/10), I'll be moving to a new time slot on FRESH 105.9. Instead of hosting afternoons, I'll be covering the work-day shift, which means you can hear me between 10AM and 4PM. Basically, what this means is that my days of noon wakeup calls are over! I guess I better pick up an alarm clock this weekend. Really Chicago Public Schools, really? On Tuesday, CPS along with our beloved city crook, uh I mean mayor, Richard M. Daley, announced that CPS alum Jeremih, has joined the efforts to get Chicago youth back-to-school this fall.
I applaud CPS for their efforts, however their methods are flawed. Jeremih's claim to "fame" is his song, entitled "Birthday Sex," which features the following lyrics:
"Girl you know I, don't need candles and cake, just need your body to make Birthday Sex ...
We ridin' with passion cause it's your birthday
Been at it for hours, i know you thirsty you kiss me sweetly, taste just like hershey's
Just tell me how you want you gift, girl" Click here to read more.
Real appropriate for these grade school age students, many under the age of 18. Of the millions of students who have attended Chicago Public Schools over the past century, was Jeremih really the greatest pop culture "icon" that you could come up with?
Official response from the district? “Jeremih is a musician. His music is no different from all other music our kids listen to,” said Ron Huberman, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. “Kids are using social network sites like Twitter, MySpace and Facebook to communicate with one another, so it makes sense to have a young alumni like Jeremih use the site to reach out to students," he said.
When asked about the CPS back-to-school initiative, Delilah Johnson, 22, a junior at DePaul University and 2005 alum of Percy L. Julian High School, had something great to say. "If the teachers don't expect anything better than what Jeremih is singing about in these lyrics, that's an insult to us."
Those against the 'Birthday Sex Back-to-School Drive' are planning on protesting outside of CPS headquarters, schools, and facilities, which sounds like a fantastic idea to me. However, others are out of their minds in my opinion, by encouraging parents to keep their kids out of schools as a result of this CPS debacle. Encouraging kids to stay out of school is never a good idea.
So, what's the solution? CPS needs a new song! May I make a suggestion?
Well, it's official! No more texting while driving! Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed into law a measure that will ban Illinois drivers from sending text messages while driving in an effort to cut down on distracted driving. The law also prohibits drivers from reading texts, surfing the web, and downloading ring tones.Downloading ring tones? Seriously? Is downloading ring tones while driving really that big of an issue here in Illinois?

Friendly Chicago Cop Let Me Off the Hook
8/6/09
Poor Sarah! Yesterday, she had to schedule last-minute oral surgery because her wisdom teeth were killing her. The extraction was overwhelmingly a success and we were in and out of the office within 15-20 minutes. By dinner time, all Sarah wanted was something cold to sip on. Being the good husband that I am, the dog and I drove over to the McDonald's to pick up a dinner for me and a milk shake for the patient laying on the couch back at home. Keep in mind, Sarah and I are new to the neighborhood, so I'm not 100% familiar with the streets around our block.
On the way home, I made a bonehead decision. I made a left hand turn on a street that after about a block turned into a one-way street. I realized that I was driving down the one-way when I noticed that the cars parked on both sides of the street were facing me as I continued to drive. Because it's a city block with no driveways, I couldn't simply pull in, backup, and turn around. I had one of two choices: stop, put my car into reverse and get out of dodge or I simply proceed down the street or proceed with caution. I chose the later. Naturally, when I reached the end of the block, one of Chicago's finest was sitting there waiting for me. I sure felt like an idiot!
I explained the error of my ways. "How long have you lived her, sir?" asked the Chicago Police officer.
To make matters worse, I told the truth, "About two months."
"You've lived here for two months and you still don't know the streets on your own block?!?" responded the officer. He proceeded to ask me for my drivers license. He ran my ID and I assume he saw that I have a pretty clean record.
As he handed me back my ID, he asked me what I did for a living. I replied and he responded by saying that he loves the radio station. After a quick talk about the importance of paying attention on the road, he let me off the hook with a verbal warning.
SCORE!
However, by the time I made it home, Sarah's milkshake had already started to melt. Ugh!
This is almost unbelievable! A woman jogger from Philadelphia was found dead last night after a large tree branch hit her on the head as she was running through a park. Investigators believe a 30-foot-long branch snapped from a tree and struck her, causing severe head injuries and a broken neck.
Ok, so more details are coming out of Hollywood about why Paula Abdul quit her gig with American Idol. According to "The Hollywood Reporter," sources allege that Abdul wanted 20-million-dollars to continue with the show, verses the roughly two-million-dollars that she was paid for her role on the show last season. "Idol" reportedly offered their now former judge a 30-percent raise and a multi-year contract, but the greedy host wanted more.
I know it's wild to start talking about Halloween already, but I couldn't resist sharing this story with you. Kate Gosselin's famous blond mullet may be a popular Halloween costume this fall. Instead of going to the hair salon to get your own Gosselin do, why not just visit http://www.buycostumes.com and buy a wig? According to the Daily News, for $14.99 you can own the star's asymmetrical hairdo. The site says that the "sleek and so stylish" wig will make people think you have eight children.
This weekend, join The New FRESH 105.9 at Soldier Field for the Chicago Bears Family Day. The gates open at 10am, but before you go in, stop by the FRESH 105.9 tent located outside of the stadium. Although I'm not sure what we're giving away, I do know that we'll have some pretty cool prizes, provided by the Bears and Meijer.
Michael Jackson, Made in the Image of Egyptian Statue?
8/5/09
According to the World Health Organization, it's possible that a Swine Flu outbreak is on the way. Ironically, I'm feeling a little under the weather. Nice!! With Mike LeBaron on vacation, I'm pulling double-duty this week covering the FRESH 105.9 morning show and afternoon show. As such, I'm not certain if I've come down with complications due to my summer allergies or if I'm feeling run down because my sleep schedule was abruptly modified. I took a little blue pill ... uh I mean a little white pill earlier this morning (Claritin), so hopefully it will kick in soon!
What came first, Michael Jackson or a limestone statue of an Egyptian woman? I will admit, the the likeness is remarkable! Check out Michael Sneed's column from this morning's Chicago Sun-Times and see for yourself! Click here to read more.
Netflix fans, ever wonder how it all works? Yesterday, the Chicago Tribune's Christopher Borrelliran a fascinating piece on how the dvd's get from their warehouse in northwest suburban Carol Stream to your front door. Click here to read more.
The personal fraud protection company LifeLock guarantees the security of your identity under their employ. So much so that, in a nationwide ad, CEO Todd Davis posts his personal social security number on the side of a van — daring identity thieves to give it a shot. Turns out, they did. No fewer than 25 motivated thieves stole Davis' social security number — with one successfully receiving a $500 loan. LifeLock maintains its diligence, claiming that for a nationwide ad, only one case of stolen identity isn't too bad. Hmmm.... Click here to read about other marketing flops!
On TV tonight is one of my guilty pleasures, ABC's summer filler game show series, "Wipeout." On the show, contestants work their way through an obstacle course, competing for a $50,000 prize. Hey, I know what could take this show to the next level: "Wipeout: Celebrity Edition."
Paula Abdul To Leave "American Idol"
Well, it's official! Paula Abdul says her "American Idol" days are over!
Late last night, American Idol judge broke the news to fans via her Twitter page. Over five separate Twitter posts, Paula wrote, "With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to #IDOL. I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all ...being a part of a show that I helped from day 1 become an international phenomenon ... Paul quitting Idol isn't really shocking, as there has been rumors floating around Hollywood regarding the singer's future on the show. Last month, Paula's reps hinted that she might not return to the show, as they were unable to reach an agreement with Idol producers.
Naturally, the media's always looking for a scandal to report. Could the real reason Paula's leaving the show be a result of Kara DioGuardi? Earlier this week, it was reported that judge Kara DioGuardi, who joined the show last season, had signed on to return to the show.
The ninth season of "American Idol" is slated to begin next January on Fox.

Common sense can help keep prices down
I really need to vent.
My wife is an avid Whole Foods shopper. I’m slowly coming around on the whole idea. I mean, I grew up on foods bought at Jewel, Dominick’s, Eagle Country Market (remember them?), & HEAVEN FORBID…Aldi. And here I am today, doing just fine! I’ve found about a half a dozen items at Whole Foods that I can’t live without. But I digress. Sarah has grad classes on Thursday nights and for the past month or so, I’ve eaten dinner at Whole Foods. $5.00 will buy you two HUGE slices of delicious pizza. It’s nothing like Aurelio’s, my favorite pizza, but it’s good nonetheless.
Last night, I stood in line at the Gold Coast Whole Foods waiting to pay for my slices of cheese and pepperoni. Sitting on a display near the register, I noticed a package of meat from the butcher. Someone went to the butcher counter, ordered a pound of fresh chicken breast, put it in their cart, brought it to the checkout lane, decided that they didn’t want it anymore, and set it on the display. Keep in mind, this chicken retails for roughly $8.00/pound. $8.00 thrown down the drain! All because someone changed their mind.
No, it’s not because someone changed their mind. It’s because someone was lazy and didn’t want to walk the meat back to the butcher. Ok, maybe they were embarrassed to hand the meat back to the worker. In that case, couldn’t you have just at least droped the meat off at a cooler? Did you have to leave it out in the open!?!
The point of my rant is that if people would just practice common sense, we can work together to keep prices low. Without a doubt, stores like Whole Foods will have to cut corners in some areas if everyone did pulled stunts like this.
Careless. Laziness. It’s pathetic.
What’s even more pathetic is that I’m all steamed up over this.
Since this is my blog, I assume it’s a safe place to brag for a moment. I have the best commute home from work. I play a little game while I walk. I try to take each step with the music that I’m listening to at the time. Yeah, I probabley look kind of goofy to those who pass by.
While walking home on Tuesday, my random playlist pulled up the following songs that are worth checking out:
1. Brandon Heath - Give Me Your Eyes Listening to Brandon’s music, it’s easy to tell who his musical influences are: Ryan Adams, Josh Rouse, and Matt Wertz. He began playing guitar and writing songs as a 13-year old. He found himself inspired by writers like Sing, Shawn Colvin, David Wilcox, Ryan Adams, Josh Rouse, and Matt Wertz.
2. Nada Surf - I Like What You Say
Thanks to Jefferez for tipping me off to this awesome cd! Wikipedia taught me that this band is perhaps best-known for the song “Popular” from their album High/Low. But I remember Nada Surf best from when their song “Always Love” was featured in an episode of FOX’s highly acclaimed show, “The OC.” They’re back with a new indi rock album entitled “Lucky.”
3. Afters - Never Going Back to Ok
Alright, you really can’t classify this song as “new,” but I’m sure it will be fresh to you nonetheless. Recently signed to Columbia Records, The Afters is a rock band formed by two guys who first worked together in a Starbucks in Mesquite, TX, where they played for customers who were decided what to order.
I'll have more for you next week. :)
Have a great weekend!
I begin my day like many. When I roll out of bed, I start the coffee, sit at the kitchen table, and read the Times.
A new building is being constructed across the street. I glanced out the window at 8:30a today, noticed the activity of these two workers, and decided to grab my camera phone. It’s quite hard to see in this fuzzy picture, but the man on the right hand side is holding what appears to be a pair of binoculars. I can only imagine what or who he’s gawking at.
This activity has become a common occurance with workers of this building. I once noticed guys on nearly every floor looking in the same direction. It was roughly 7:15a, so I imagine they were staring at a woman who didn’t realize she had an audience.
I didn’t realize this was such a problem, but window peepers like these two men hard at work are being put on alert in the State of Wisconsin. A bill, Senate Bill 14 (“Peeping Tom Bill”), is awaiting signing by the governor. The punishment for such activity is quite severe:
Senate Bill 14 establishes window peeping as a specific crime and may require the offender to register as a sex offender. In addition, the offense is classified as a sex crime, thus an offender may receive treatment.” (click here to read more)
So neighbors…consider yourself warned. Close your blinds unless you would like to be seen. They’re watching!
