Although Conan O'Brien delivered his last monologue for "The Tonight Show" last Friday, it appears that NBC and the late-night host aren't done with each other just yet. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the network has just picked up a new drama from O'Brien's Conaco production company.
The project, currently called "Justice," is based on an hourlong pilot about a Supreme Court justice who leaves the bench to start his own legal practice, THR reported. O'Brien will purportedly serve as executive producer with long time partners Jeff Ross, David Kissinger and John Eisendrath (who is also credited as writer).
The announcement comes just a week after O'Brien reached a deal to leave NBC after working with the peacock for over 20 years — from his early days as a writer at "Saturday Night Live" to earning a cult following on "Late Night" to his latest ill-fated "Tonight" gig. In an effort to keep O'Brien on the network, NBC had signed a deal with the comedian in 2004 that promised he would take over the coveted "Tonight Show" desk in 2009 from then host Jay Leno. In the wake of Leno's failed prime-time show and the network's decision to move him back to 11:30, Conan walked away from the job last week with a $33 million settlement.
Although Conan will no longer host any shows on the network and is prohibited from any hosting duties until September, as per the settlement his production company will operate at NBC Universal through the end of the development season.
